Leesburg Gets 3 Lifters In State, February 11, 1989
February 11, 1989|By Joe Williams of The Sentinel Staff
Leesburg
qualified three lifters for state in its first match of the season, but
the Yellow Jackets failed to capture a victory in the tri-match Friday
afternoon in the school's fieldhouse.
Leesburg's lack of a victory wasn't attributed as much to a lack of quality as it was to a lack of quantity.
Leesburg's lack of a victory wasn't attributed as much to a lack of quality as it was to a lack of quantity.
The Yellow Jackets
lifted without anyone in the three lower weight classes - the 114, the
123, and the 132. Despite the lack of depth, St. Cloud, which dominated
all three of those classes, only defeated Leesburg, 39-34. Gateway
finished a distant third with 16.
The state qualifiers were Lee Hanks, who won the 198-pound class with a total lift of 645 pounds (380 bench, 265 clean and jerk), Robert Russ, who finished second to Hanks with a 535 total (285-250), and Brad Dunn, who won the 220-pound class with a 570 total (290-280).
A fourth Leesburg lifter, freshman Donnie Williams, who won the 165 class, only missed qualifying for state by 5 pounds with his lift total of 510 (285-225).
The state qualifying weight in the 198 class is a total of 535 and in Dunn's 220 class it's a 550 total.
''I'm ecstatic, just like they are,'' Leesburg Coach Tracy Sherrod said. ''We have eight more meets to go and it's a great thrill to know that we already are over the hump. Now, we have to keep on getting better.
''I thought we might have Lee and Brad qualify both went to state last year but for Robert to qualify is great. He just had his mind set that he was going to do it.''
Leesburg should get some help in its lighter classes possibly as early as next week.
Among those expected to fill the void are David Cowin, who only completed soccer season Thursday night, and wrestlers Chris and Bruce Floyd and Sherman Manley. The wrestling team competes in districts today.
''I think individually they did quite well,'' Sherrod said. ''It was just a lack of bodies that we had. And, it is only going to get better.''
